I provided a sample xls file for my customer to follow, gleaned from this moodle doc page.
I had to save the Excel.xls file as a .csv type before moodle would cooperate. I tried uploading the .xls file with the various separators, :, ;, /t, , - but they did not work. I had to do a File Save As and change the Type of file to .csv
Notice also I enrolled the accounts into a course with a specific role of teacher. This saved me a ton of time!!
Using the Site Admin |Users |Upload Users - specifying the .csv file, creating over 50 accounts at once and enrolling them all at the same time in a specific role is a super use full moodle feature!
If you are planning on creating a batch of accounts and then enrolling them manually - do yourself a big favor and figure out how this works.
1 - create your upload file using a speadsheet - follow the moodle doc page for required fields.
- Specify a course and role column if desired. Save yourself the process of enrolling them.
2 - save the spreadsheet as a .csv file - practice with a smaller number of recs initially
3 - Use the Site Admin | Users | Upload Users feature
4 - Browse to the file, upload it and let moodle parse it
5 - In the upload preview screen - look carefully at the other options that may also be useful
Note: I have found it helpful to set the password to something predictable for everyone initially, with a requirement of the user updating it upon the first login. This is one of those useful options located in the upload preview screen.
