Installing MS SQL server studio 2008...in support of moodle

In support of one of my moodle instances - I am installing - configuring and connecting MS SQL studio 2008 express version. I wonder if i could simply use MySQL workbench to connect and read / consume from the DB.  Probably, but, experience has taught me to use the software that the vendor recommends....but, i digress before i even get started.

Even the express free version of MS SQL express is a behemoth...550 MB.  I downloaded the software from the MS download site and installed it on my laptop.  I kinda paid attention to the installation program, accepting defaults ect.  It completed without much fanfare, which I appreciate.  I launched the program and provided the credentials to connect to the desired server and was greeted with a failure message.  Microsoft SQL error: 53.  you can look it up if you want more detail

I installed the software again, on my tower and noticed on the initial install screen, a message that said "After SQL Server Setup completes, you must apply SQL Server 2008 Service Pack1 (SP1) or a later pack before you run SQL Server 2008 on this version of Windows".

Opps - missed that.  So - I am now installing the SP1 on my laptop and will see if my connection parameters actually work.

The update was pretty quick and painless.  I do like the way the MS products walk you though a logical process with specific steps while describing each one with just enough detail.  Bravo Microsoft.
