Moving a students grades from one moodle course to another

We have two sections of the same course - separate courses on our moodle 2.6 instance.  Students started the course, completed a few graded assignments and then one of the teachers emailed me this question.

Well.  A few points of understanding first.  Moodle wants to share its data.  Moodle likes to collaborate and share with other software - so its likely that something could be done here.

If we were talking lots of students and lots of score data, then its a no brainer - you would use this techique to move the data.

Steps to move scored items for students from course A to course B.

1 - In the course to move from, create a grade export - you will have to choose all the students in the course, which is ok also get to choose which activities in the course - there is a little option at the bottom of the form to select / deselect all.  Could be helpful.  I choose Excel format, or a CSV.  Also, a checkbox to include grade comments!

2 - Once the Excel file is created, open it and remove the students you DO NOT WANT.  since export tool does not have option to filter by enrolled students....

3 - Go to the course where you want to import the data and Add the Enrollment for the student - important!

4 - Choose Grades Import - browsing to Excel file.  You may have to explicitly choose how to separate the data in the file...be patient, you will get it.

5 - Now you get to match up the fields from the import file to the course - this is a little tedious, but how else do you expect it will know where, which activity, to bring the score into?

6 - Once the match up is complete - finish the import and whala - grades for student A, B and C from course A are now in course B.

This is a lot of work if you are only moved a little grade data, but if its any kind of volumn, then this process, tedious and all, makes a LOT OF SENSE.

I was only moving two students, so I manually entered them in the Grader Report form.

Moodle can be confusing because it has so much capacity!
