I know, a long title. One of our moodle customers contacted me last week with a message like this "my recent activity block is not working". Hmmmm, I wondered what that meant.
Sometimes, customers do not have full knowledge of something. They set about using something without complete knowledge of it. This makes sense, since using something is a very effective method of learning it..... If we waited til complete knowledge before using something, well, we would wait a very long time.
To my point. I meet with my customer and she said when she updates a file in her course, the file does not show in the recent activity block. The short of it is this. The Recent activity block shows activity "activity", like, quizzes, assignments, forum posts, NOT resource (files, file updates) activity.

The doc says it shows 'resources', which should include files, but it does not.
To further muddy the water, my customer uses a shared account for her customers who want to access the content/course. The Recent activity block only shows the activity as recent when the user logins on.
I asked my co-worker to look into this and see if there was a better solution, like a different block that may help us.
The Latest News block to the rescue. This block works in combination with the course News forum.
Adding items to the News forum automatically pushes out to the Latest news block. This block is visible to the student role, which is what our shared account is using, and includes a link to previous posts. This seems to meet all my customers needs and does not require anything special on our side, I like it.
